Effective Journal Editorial Management (1010EJE)

Level 2 - intermediate.
1010EJE

Thursday 21 October 2010, London

Tutors:
Rebecca Marsh, Emerald Group Publishing
Jamie Humphrey, Royal Society of Chemistry

Overview:
This course introduces the common issues and tasks encountered in journal management. Considering various approaches to effective journal management and relationship building, it enables delegates to build on their skills to be more effective in meeting the day-to-day challenges of journal publishing, changing business models and editorial processes. The emphasis is on practical advice and guidance, and participants will be able to apply and integrate ideas and suggestions to help improve their own journals. The course is also an excellent opportunity for journal publishing managers at non-profit society publishers and commercial publishers to meet and exchange experiences.

Programme:

  • What is effective editorial management?
  • Journal development and quality improvement
  • Relationships with key stakeholders in journals publishing
  • Influencing skills and change management
  • Key business issues affecting managing editors and publishers

Learning objectives - by the end of the course delegates will:
Understand stakeholders' needs and consider ways to establish effective relationships; have an overview of techniques to manage and improve their journals; have gained advice on how to positively influence stakeholders and implement change; have a brief overview of the essentials of the publishing business and how they affect editorial processes and management, such as contracts, copyright and finances; have discussed experiences and shared ideas with their peers.

Who should attend:
This course is aimed at junior managing editors/equivalent editorial personnel, with 1-2 years' experience. Staff newly appointed to these positions will also benefit provided they have some previous experience of publishing. It is not suitable for more experienced managing editors or publishers with broader managerial responsibility. As the editorial role differs between organizations, a questionnaire will be circulated to attendees prior to the course in order to establish the areas of the programme that are the most relevant to delegates' work.
