Online criminals target the publishing industry in a number of ways. The spectrum of offences range from websites offering infringing copies of works to download, through peer-to-peer file sharing of infringing copies, and password bootlegging, to the commercial sale of counterfeit copies of publications.

The industry has growing expertise in tackling each type of threat in an appropriate and effective manner, often by working with commercial partners. ALPSP is working with the Publishers Association on an anti-piracy service developed by and for the industry. It offers an array of benefits to publishers and to Trade Associations.

ABOUT THE PORTAL

The Copyright Infringement Portal is a web based tool for serving take down notices to Webmasters or ISPs hosting content that infringes copyright. Simply log in via a web browser and enter the details of the infringement in a simple form. The system identifies the Webmaster or ISP, checks for repeat infringers, and automatically drafts and serves an appropriate notice.

In addition, the portal allows publishers to enter titles and schedule a search (CIPSearch) either daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually. CIPSearch trawls the top feeder websites (i.e. http://www.avaxhome.ws/ebooks or www.ebookee.org) looking for the title then reports back results including identified cyberlocker download links (i.e. www.filesonic.com). The downloads listed on the locker sites are also checked to see whether links have been removed or are still active. Simply verify the infringement and serve a notice.

There are currently over 1,600 titles which are searched either on a daily or weekly basis for copyright infringement.

The portal served 140,000 notices in 2011 to remove infringing content across 52,000 titles.

ALPSP members are entitled to a 50% discount on the list prices. All registered users receive a copy of the PA’s Digital Piracy Newsletter.

To use the portal, ALPSP members will need to register and pay on the portal website.
